A London Interior Design Studio

One studio, three disciplines, one point of contact

Janine Stone & Co has been designing homes in London since 1987. From our studio beside Battersea Park we work across prime central London and the wider capital — Belgravia, Chelsea, Kensington, Knightsbridge, Mayfair, Holland Park, Hampstead and St John's Wood — on whole-house commissions for private clients. What separates us from most interior design companies in London is structural: our designers, architects and construction managers sit in one studio, under one contract, reporting to one person. There is no gap between the drawing and the build for a project to fall into.

What Happens Next

How a London commission begins

Nothing is asked of you at the start, and no fee is payable until the scope is agreed in writing.

A conversation

A call, or a meeting at the studio. You describe the house and what you want from it; we tell you honestly whether we are the right practice for it, and what it is likely to involve.

A considered brief

We visit the property, test what is feasible against planning and structure, and set out a scope, a realistic programme and an open-book cost framework before anything is drawn.

One team, one contract

Design, architecture and construction proceed under a single point of contact. You are not asked to coordinate three companies, or to arbitrate between them.

Where we work in London

Every London borough behaves differently once a project reaches planning. We work regularly with the planning and conservation teams at Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, Camden and Wandsworth, and we know where each draws the line on basements, rear extensions, roof alterations and listed interiors. Read more about our work in Belgravia, Chelsea, Kensington, Knightsbridge, Mayfair and Hampstead, or explore our interior architecture, basement extension and listed building work across the city, or see the full account of where we work.

Still deciding whether to buy? Our Clarity appraisal shows you what a London property could become — alternate floor plans, realistic costs and a programme — before you commit.

Common Questions

Interior Designers in London, answered

What does an interior designer in London actually cost?

Fees on a whole-house London commission are normally a percentage of the construction and furnishing budget, or a fixed fee agreed once the scope is clear. Because we also cost the build, we can give you a realistic total early rather than a design fee that arrives before anyone knows what the works will cost. We set out the fee basis in writing before any work begins.

How long does a London interior design project take?

A single-room scheme can run a few months. A whole-house project in London typically runs twelve to twenty-four months from first sketch to handover, and longer where listed-building consent, basement works or party wall awards are involved. We set a realistic programme at the outset rather than an optimistic one.

Do you handle planning and building work as well as interiors?

Yes. Interior design, residential architecture and construction management are all delivered in-house. That includes planning and listed-building applications, party wall matters, and management of the contractor and trades through to completion — under a single point of contact.

Which parts of London do you work in?

Regularly across prime central London — Belgravia, Chelsea, Kensington, Knightsbridge, Mayfair, Holland Park and Notting Hill — and in north and south-west London including Hampstead, Highgate, St John's Wood, Regent's Park and Wimbledon. We also work in the country and internationally.

Can you work on listed and period London homes?

Yes. Much of London's finest housing is listed or sits within a conservation area. Our architects handle listed-building consent and conservation requirements as part of the commission, and we design alterations that will survive scrutiny rather than ones that have to be redrawn after refusal.

What is the difference between an interior designer and an interior architect?

An interior designer resolves how a space looks, feels and functions — materials, light, joinery and furniture. An interior architect resolves the space itself — structure, layout, levels, services and compliance. Most London firms offer one and subcontract the other. We hold both in the same studio, which is why layout and finish are decided together rather than in sequence.

Do you take on smaller London projects?

Our work is normally whole-house or whole-apartment. If your project is smaller, or you are still deciding whether to buy, our Clarity pre-purchase appraisal is often the more useful place to start.

Planning a project in London?

Whether you are buying, refurbishing or rebuilding, we would be glad to talk it through — including whether we are the right studio for it.
