English Country House Interiors

A considered approach to country house interior design

For over three decades we have created the interiors of exceptional country houses across England — homes that balance the character of heritage architecture with the comfort of modern country living. Whether the brief calls for a faithful English country house interior or a lighter, more contemporary country scheme, our designers work hand in glove with our in-house residential architects and construction managers so that every element — from spatial planning to the final furnishing — is resolved as one. Common Questions

Country house interior design, answered

What does country house interior design at Janine Stone & Co involve?

Complete interiors for significant country houses — from architectural joinery and finishes to furniture, fabrics and lighting — designed as one scheme with the building itself. We work in both classic English and more contemporary country registers; the house, not a house style, leads.

Do you handle architecture and building work as well as interiors?

Yes. Interior design, residential architecture and construction management are delivered under one roof, so a country house commission is carried by a single team from first drawing to handover.

Can you work on listed country houses?

Much of our work is Grade I and Grade II listed. We restore what carries the character of the house and design modern comfort quietly around it, with listed-building consent handled in-house.

How is a project of this scale managed and costed?

Through our own project and construction management, run on an open-book basis: every cost visible and reconciled against an agreed programme. Country houses carry unknowns; transparency is the only honest way to manage them.

Where do you work?

Across England — the Cotswolds, the Home Counties and beyond — from our London studio, with selected projects internationally.

How do we begin?

With a conversation, ideally at the house itself. If you have not yet exchanged, our complimentary Clarity appraisal will tell you what the house could become before you are bound to it.

Many of the houses we are proudest of have never been photographed for anyone but their owners. Discretion is not a service we offer; it is how the studio works.
