A New Build Country House

New Build Country House

Project Brief
To develop a concept design for a new build country home, that would become a lasting legacy for our client’s family.

Design Inspiration
Set on an acre plot this 700m² / 7500ft² house’s design was inspired by a cutting the client had found in a magazine.

The Architecture
The main house has 5 bays each recessing back and reducing in width to create a harmonious classical hierarchy from the central formal areas. The South and North elevations mirror each other.

The double band course above the first-floor windows and parapet frieze adds extra articulation and interest to the elevation, as do the brick pilaster quoins to the edges of the bays, with proportions based on the Doric order at ground level and Ionic at 1st floor level.

The East wing pool complex diverges using a clean modernist elevation, that reflects the contemporary feel of the pool hall within. All the windows are trimmed with Portland stone, and the bricks are handmade with flush pointing for a distinct patterned and unique feel. The roof has Welsh slate with lead ridges.

The chimneys add to the traditional feel of the main house but are used for ventilation extracts rather than smoke. The internal elevations focus on well-lit works of art and tailor-made joinery rather than fireplaces. The house has very high levels of insulation and its heating needs are met with a ground source heat pump system.

Living Spaces & Features
At ground floor level there are 2 formal reception rooms, a home office and an entrance hall with an open-plan family kitchen dining area linked to a playroom and family snug. The family area links through to the pool complex with a gym, steam and sauna and changing rooms, linking to the side entrance, boot hall and utility/pantry rooms.

Upstairs there are 6 bedrooms, all with ensuite bath or shower rooms. The oval windows are a romantic addition that are there for the softly framed views out over the garden from the master suite. The large windows and French doors without barred fenestration offer great views to the garden that have a relaxed formality to the main central sunken lawn, with a games lawn to the West. The York stone paving around the gardens allow level access around the garden and space to enjoy the summer evenings outside.
