The Chess Room

Janine Stone has created truly elegant and harmonious spaces from what was a narrow and challenging foot-print. Some internal walls were realigned and the spaces have been thoughtfully reimagined to bring a fresh vitality and energy; creating an elegant, sophisticated and highly liveable home for a young international family.

The Brief

The brief asked that Janine implement a full interior design and refurbishment working carefully and sensitively to maximise the listed house and bring it into the modern era.

This incorporated complete restoration of the period ironwork staircase, restoration and finishing of walls and plasterwork, new bronze tipped hardwood, limestone and honed marble floors, and the creation of a handsome aesthetic that we see today.

The Rooms

Rooms were remodelled to enhance the proportions and improve the layout and flow. From darkly sophisticated tailored reception rooms to a lighter, cooler palette for the relaxing bedrooms and chic bathrooms.

Highlights include a bespoke card room, a particular requirement from the client who is passionate about chess. With hand-polished Santos Rosewood panelled walls, which provide the backdrop for the artwork. An exquisite bespoke card table takes centre stage and a specially sourced set of antique Indian chess pieces complete the story.

The Approach:

Janine Stone was given a great level of freedom to create a dynamic design for this family home. The international clients were away for almost all of the eighteen months it took to complete with perhaps two site visits before commencement of the project and partway through the process.

When a client entrusts every element to the designer, it’s a tremendous responsibility to ensure one delivers a home that meets and exceeds their expectations.”
