The Birthday Party
at the Harold Pinter Theatre –
Perhaps it’s because I am an interior designer, but I always relish the opportunity to dissect set designs when at the theatre. The production values and level of craftsmanship on display for performances that are so ephemeral always impresses me. For anyone else into there theatre, then I would say that there are at least three must-see productions currently performing in London, a buffet feast for all the senses to savour.
The Birthday Party, currently showing at The Harold Pinter theatre, features an all star British cast including; Zoë Wanamaker CBE, Peter Wight, Toby Jones and Stephen Mangan. Set designers, Stephen and Timothy Quay or The brothers Quay, as they are better known in Hollywood have really brought the setting of a rundown boarding house to life. The wallpaper peels, the net-curtains have been spluttered with mud and the establishment even exudes a decaying must that’s detectable by the audience. A rather innocuous setting, reflecting the unassuming call at the door, by a couple prepared to turn Toby Young’s erstwhile protagonist’s birthday party into a nightmare.
The Birthday Party, Harold Pinter Theatre, Until 14th April.
